Sevenoaks U12 girls started the season with 4 girls who had played for the U11s the previous season, a new manager, a big recruitment campaign and lots of enthusiasm. Which was just as well, as although the recruitment campaign soon attracted some new players, a lot of them were new to football or were relatively inexperienced.
Despite being beaten (sometimes by quite a margin) every week in their league games the girls kept smiling, Dan the manager and the other coaches worked hard and by February the team really started to work together.
The defenders defended ferociously, the forwards started scoring goals and every player fought for possession of every ball.
Suddenly teams that had previously beaten Sevenoaks with ease started feeling increasingly uncomfortable as the goal margins narrowed sharply.
Then buoyed by a close fought game against the league leaders, Foots Cray Lions, the previous week, Sevenoaks played Sittingbourne Lionesses.
At long last everything came to together and Sevenoaks won – only 1-0 but in terms of perseverance and hard work the score didn’t matter.
The photo says it all (and the parents all went home with smiles on their faces too!).
